Were the social concerns of the Progressive Era correctly depicted in The Jungle?”

History

The Jungle exposed the terrible situations of the meatpacking industry, brought it to the limelight what was really happening when the government didn't step into businesses. It shadowed a hard working immigrant family and the struggles they faced when coming to America. One of the biggest things it brought to light was the terrible situations seen at a meat packing facility. It also brought up numerous other issues, such as the circumstances employees had to work in, prostitution, and immigration. Although this was a fictional story it was based in reality for a working family. It became widely widespread and people called for change. Sinclair wrote it in hopes that more people would become social democrats. He said 'I aimed at the public's heart and by accident, I hit it in the stomach'. He may not have had as big of an impression as he had expected, but he did get the American people up in arms that Congress passed a bill within weeks to try and talk some of the issues that people saw in The Jungle. This is one of many things that Progressives sought to achieve.

Which Enlightenment philosopher introduced the idea that people enter a social contract with the purpose of maintaining order in
mafiozo [28]
Although  Locke and Rousseau  wrote prominent treatises on the social contract, Thomas Hobbes introduced the idea of it. He argued that human beings were evil in nature, and thus needed to enter a contract in which everyone basically agreed not to kill each other (i.e. in his natural state, although completely free, man would always be wary of subjected to another man's brutishness. Whereas in society we are all supposedly better off-even if there are sacrifices involved-because there is an agreement binding each man into behavior that's meant to contain man's evil nature).

How did the national or central government get stronger between independence and 1800?
pogonyaev

The national government got stronger thanks to the Articles of Confederation being replaced with the US Constitution. The Articles of Confederation was America's first constitution. This constitution lasted roughly a decade, as it was extremely ineffective and gave the federal government very little power. For example, the federal government could not collect taxes or force states to follow national laws.

When the US Constitution was passed, the federal government gained significant power. This included the creation of an executive branch, the idea that federal laws trump state laws, and the ability to raise funds in order to create a national military.
