The reason the narrator in "Top of the Food Chain" gives for orininally spraying with DDT is to help to control the insect population in Borneo.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, commonly regarded as DDT, is a colorless, tasteless, and almost odorless crystalline chemical compound, an organochlorine,  developed as an insecticide,which became infamous for its environmental impacts.
