The Southern officers (Confederate) known for their ambitious nature who followed the rules of honour and personal pride, which help them to fight together for the cause.
The South had a weak economy as they depended on agriculture and had no manufacturing industries. They also didn't have much transportation or a fleet of ships to blockaded and couldn't trade with European countries.
There are multiple factors such as disease and invaders from outside and even conflicts within Rome but maybe the invaders were the problem because they ended up being the reason why Rome fell.
