‘Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.’”

—Nick Carraway, The Great Gatsby

F is for F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of Gatsby and master of human insight wrapped in poetry. His novel begins here, his narrator Nick Carraway, grappling with his father’s caution of criticism—

“All the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

In short, people judge, and Nick tries to refrain because his father said so. I think about Nick’s words and my life. I remember how often my mother would stop herself mid-criticism and say, “I’m not going to say that. It wasn’t very nice.” Then Philippians 4:8 comes to mind about thinking on excellent, praiseworthy things.

Speaking of excellence and praise, what about this one for its sheer lyricism? “It was dawn now on Long Island and we went about opening the rest of the windows downstairs, filling the house with grey turning, gold turning light. The shadow of a tree fell abruptly across the dew and ghostly birds began to sing among the blue leaves. There was a slow pleasant movement in the air, scarcely a wind, promising a cool lovely day.”

The answer choice which represents the strongest counterclaim is; Choice D; The flat tax is unfairly oppressive to the poor, who spend a larger percentage of their income on necessities.

<h3>Which of these would provide the strongest counterclaim?</h3>

From the initial claim, the claim insinuates that all Americans will have their fair share, whether they make little or a lot of income.

However, an answer choice which best represents a counterclaim in this regard is Choice D; which insinuates otherwise that, The flat tax is unfairly oppressive to the poor, who spend a larger percentage of their income on necessities.

Answer:

It establishes the rhythm of a duet to echo the song.

Explanation:

Parallelism refers to the use of the same grammatical structures in a series of sentences. Most of the time, parallelism is used in order to provide a sense of rhythm to the text. In this case, parallelism provides a sense of rhythm that is meant to echo the song, as it reminds the reader of a duet. As the song is also meant to be a duet (father and mother) the structure of the text highlights the subject matter.

Explain why passive rather than active verb forms are used in certain types of text
Verdich [7]
ANSWER: Passive verb forms are used to shift the focus off the agent and onto the subject.

There are two nouns in a basic sentence; a subject and an agent. The agent acts on the subject. Here, the subject is bolded and the agent is italicized.
I ate <em>cereal.

^ </em>That is an active sentence, because it focuses on the 'I'. Below are examples of passive sentences.
<em>
</em><em>Cereal </em>was eaten by me.
<em></em><em>Cereal </em>was eaten.

^As you can see, sometimes passive sentences don't even contain a subject. This is particularly useful when you want to divert attention from the agent, such as when your sibling asks where the last bit of cereal went (Doesn't <em></em>'The cereal was eaten' sound less guilty than 'I ate the cereal'?)

Hope this helped!
