<span>Dowager Empress Cixi supported the Boxers and the rebellion because 1) the Boxers were nationalist and supported the Chinese government, 2) the Boxers had more success with fighting foreign enemies than the regular military had. The Empress saw this is an opportunity to defeat foreign forces in China and to defend sovereignty.</span>
