The Free Ground Party was a short-lived political party in the United States active during the presidential elections of 1848 and 1852, and in some state elections. Founded in Buffalo, New York, it was a third party, and of a single theme, which had great resonance and obtained its greatest support in the State of New York. The party leadership was composed of former anti-slavery members of the Whig Party and the Democratic Party. Its main purpose was to oppose the expansion of slavery in the western territories, with the argument that free men in free soil make up a system morally and economically superior to that of slavery. He opposed slavery in the new territories (coinciding with the Wilmot Amendment) and sometimes worked to eliminate laws that discriminated against African-Americans released in states like Ohio. Party members were largely absorbed by the Republican Party between 1854 and 1856, through the Anti-Nebraska Movement.
