When Elie arrives at the concentration compound, called Buna, the prisoners claim that compared to before, Buna is now a paradise. Elie doesn't understand how that place can be a paradise, since it looks like hell on earth. However, the veterans claim that before the concentration camp had no water or food, the prisoners had no blankets and slept naked amid the negative temperature, being a miracle that some of them survived. New prisoners would not experience as bad an experience as veterans, even if their situation was not good either.
