There was a lot of unemployment and low life expediencies at this time. The low life expediencies were partly due to the fact that people didn't have enough money to buy necessities like food and medicine.<span />

Members of the Democratic Republican party believed in the direct interpretation of the Constitution. The party was in control of the government and many citizens believed the government should not extend their power. A federal government should not have access to the peoples' money because it would give them the ability to create a tyrannical government.
It created millions of new jobs and actually launched us into a time of prosperity. <span />

The collapse of the Soviet Union comes to mind. It was basically strangled to death by containment. Similar to the Anaconda plan used by the North to blockade the south during the American Civil war. You can also argue the fact that most communist states were in the field of containment, with very few or non being outside of it.
