I don't think the magnificent palace ever had an actual name.
But it's located in the French town of Versailles, so it's always
been called "The Palace of Versailles", or simply "Versailles".

The correct way to pronounce that name is like  "Vair-SIGH".
But I grew up in Rochester NY, a place where all kinds of liberties
are taken with the names of places in and around the city.
For example, the nearby town of Chili is called "CHY-LYE",
and the nearby town of Charlotte, by the beach, is "shar-LOTT".

So, in Rochester, not very far from the house where I grew up,
is a street where the houses are bigger than my house, and
cost a lot more.  In the tradition of royalty, aristocracy, and
grand excess before the French Revolution, the street sign
says "Versailles Road".  But nobody says "Vair-SIGH"  road.
If you're from Rochester, it's "ver-SALES" road.
