The theme of William Shakespeare's Sonnet 116 is steadfastness of love. Sonnet 116 is one of Shakespeare's most prominent love sonnets, but some researchers have debated the theme has been misinterpreted because Shakespeare does not try to give any pointed conclusion in this sonnet since no resolution is required.

EXPLANATION:

The analysis of the Sonnet 116 can be seen below:

• Quatrain 1

The sonnet starts with the poet's obvious recognition of the convincing quality of the emotional unification of "true minds". Love is described in vague conditions in this first quatrain. Interpretations comprise the possibility for religious descriptions and the love for God. The idea of the marriage of true minds is considered to be a highly Christian.

• Quatrain 2

The second quatrain gives details on how love is unchanging. The second quatrain resumes Shakespeare's effort to describe love more directly. Not just direct address to love itself, the style Shakespeare's thought becomes more direct. This idea may also express in a theological sense. In the Reformation, there was a quarrel about Catholic principles. This interpretation appoints God the attention of the sonnet compared to the typical idea of love.

• Quatrain 3

Shakespeare is contending that if love is real, it will raise beside all tests of time and hardship, no manner of irrelevant details such as the person's attractiveness diminishing could change or end "the marriage of true minds".

• Couplet

The couplet of Sonnet 116 Shakespeare tells about explicating in the inverse. He says the contradictory of what it would be ordinary to say of love. Therefore, the couplet is that men have undeniable loved both in honest and true affection (it is being the most crucial part of the debate) as well as deceptively in the beauty illusions before just as Shakespeare has inscribed before this sonnet.
