Throughout his life, Constantin Brancusi (French, born in Romania, 1876–1957) was obsessed with the theme of birds. In his piece Bird in Space (1923), his purpose was not to represent a particular bird but to capture the essence of flight. For this reason, it removed the wings and other parts of the body, lengthened the body and reduced the head and beak to a sloping oval plane. This  work is the first in a series in which Brancusi worked for the next two decades until the 1940s. There are seven other marble and nine bronze versions.
