The primary difference between high relief and low relief is that a high relief must project at least halfway of the background. The correct answer is A

In high relief, the prominent figure is higher than the background, that is, the height of the figure is above the background.

Further Explanation

High relief has to with undercutting the prominent figure, particularly the heads and limbs of the sculpture so that they are not too close to the background. Also, the level of relief differs in compositions, in some sculptures; the prominent figures like the faces are in higher relief. High relief is commonly used in all cultures. This technique is present in architecture and monumental sculpture and it is still in use to date.

In Low relief, the figure appears to be shallow and the background is flat. Famous Examples of low relief can be found in the British Museum. The Tuscan also designed one of the lowest types of low relief where the figure appeared not to be too shallow from the surface.

Relief refers to an artwork whereby figures are carved on a level plane that cannot be disconnected from the plane. Relief is not free-standing but has a background where the figure is attached or raised.
