John Cabot was inspired by Christopher Columbus to sail the Atlantic; he shared the same idea that America was Asia. He planted a British flag and started a colony on the Roanoke Island. He soon ran out of supplies, left a year's value of supplies for the settlers, and navigated back to England for more supplies. He was held up in England and incapable to return for three years but the colonists mysteriously disappeared. The London Company conducted settlers to Virginia to begin a moneymaking colony that became recognized as Jamestown.
