The Middle Ages was a period of superstitions and religious fanatism. When the Black Death spread across Europe in the 14th century, people believed that the disease, and all the suffering they were experiencing it was caused by their sins. Then, the idea of beating themselves (self-flagellation) as a way to pay for these sins was not strange.
