Decide whether each quotation is an example of direct or indirect characterization. “How horrible it would be . . . if she were

condemned to be the plain, shy Millicent of a few years back.” “Betsy Johnson, the vivacious blonde secretary of the sorority” “Walking beside Louise on the way to the drugstore, Millicent felt a surge of pride.” “Bev was suddenly there in the doorway. ‘Wipe that smile off your face,’ she commanded.”

<span>“How horrible it would be . . . if she were condemned to be the plain, shy Millicent of a few years back.” - Direct characterization. The speaker explicitly says that Milicent now isn't plain and shy, and that would be a condemnation to her.

</span><span>“Betsy Johnson, the vivacious blonde secretary of the sorority” - Direct characterization. We can see Betsy and we get some information about her character (vivacious).

</span><span>“Walking beside Louise on the way to the drugstore, Millicent felt a surge of pride.” - Indirect characterization. The speaker doesn't say that Milicent is this or that kind of person. He/she just puts her in a context, commenting on her current feelings and thus allowing the reader to make a vague conclusion about her character.

</span><span>“Bev was suddenly there in the doorway. ‘Wipe that smile off your face,’ she commanded.” - Indirect characterization. Again, the speaker here describes this character's action, rather than features and character traits.</span>

How mainly does the name of Mercer's boat add to the development of the plot?
Ludmilka [50]

In <em>Alice Dunbar-Nelson's "La Juanita,"</em> the naming of Mercer's boat developed the plot of the novel in this way <u>D. By naming his boat</u> after Juanita Mercer succeeded in linking his participation in the regatta to his fight for her hand in marriage.

<h3>What was the feat of Mercer's Boat in "La Juanita"?</h3>

Mercer's boat in "La Juanita" led others in the regatta, helping them survive the treacherous Lake Pontchartrain storm that erupted during the contest.

This feat made Mercer a hero, winning the admiration and adulation of Gradpere Colomes, who was initially opposed to the union between Mercer and Juanita.

Thus, for Mercer, naming the boat after Juanita linked his participation in the regatta to his fight for Juanita's hand in marriage.

Which contains an error in logic as worded?
Alexandra [31]

The example that contains an error in logic as worded is:

D. Mark's usual reason for not turning in his homework was because he forgot his backpack.

Here, we have an adverb of reason (because), which functions as a subordinating conjunction and makes up an adverbial clause of reason. Using the word "because" after previously using the word "reason", implicates some sort of redundancy.

The logical structure to express this idea would be the following:

D. Mark's usual reason for not turning in his homework was that he forgot his backpack.
