The Stage Manager in the play Our Town serves as a "narrator"; he (or she, in some productions) explains the action to the audience, and since there is little in the way of set decoration, his commentary takes the place of some stage direction. He is a conduit between the action of the play and the audience, at times breaking the "fourth wall" by speaking directly to the audience, and at other times participating in the action. His role is similar to the role of the Chorus in ancient classical Greek drama, commenting on the action to help clarify some of the dramatic elements for the audience and helping to move the plot along.

The role of the stage manager in "Our Town" is extremely significant, and it is one of the characteristics that make the play so unusual. The stage manager is the one who guides the audience through the play. However, he is not only a guide, as he actively participates in the story as well. Because of this, the character breaks the "fourth wall." He is aware of the events being a play, yet he plays a role in it too. Because of the ambiguity as to who he is, and the ability he has to observe everything that goes on in the play, the stage manager has often been compared to God. Moreover, his presence urges the audience to be more involved in the story and to actively participate in its development.
