As Cabeza de Vaca realized that he and his men were in no condition to face an attack, he and the inspector called the Indian archers to offer them beads and bells as a gift to ease them.

Explanation:

The Indians not only gave him arrows as tokens of friendship but also came back with food several times. Enough to help Cabeza de Vaca´s men to embark again and resume their journey.
