Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can be added that options A and C should be unhesitatingly discarded, since the long Battle of the Somme, which was fought in northern France in the summer of 1916, was one of the bloodiest of the entire war. Over one million people lost their lives or were wounded. The goal of the Allies was to debilitate the German Army and to gain ground in order to aid the French soldiers who were fighting at Verdun (to the East), but they could not accomplish it. They only advanced seven miles after having fought for months.

The Battle of the Somme was one of the deadliest of WWI. The estimated death toll was 500 to 600,000 and the German lost was 600,000. Both sides sustained heavy causalities and the Allies gained little ground.
