That was the case of President William Taft when he signed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff of 1909 that raised tariffs of products imported in the United States such as coal an iron. The decision created a division in the Republican party. Some members of his party were really angered with Taft and did not support him in his reelection. The party was divided and Taft lost the election against Woodrow Wilson.
