In the year 1860, South Carolina became the first state to withdraw from the Union. It remained one of the originating integral states of the Confederacy in February 1861. The attack of the beleaguered United States' army at Fort Sumter on 12th April 1861, is generally recognized as the incomparable military operation of the war.
