The fact that the text says "Your boss is out hunting too. But guess what? He's hunting for you." and "At the sight of the tiger, er, uh...your boss...your hypothalamus..." this imitates a casual and sort of humerus tone, which is most seen in everyday conversations.
To speculate means almost the same as to contemplate. They both have to do with thinking over a subject thoroughly/ looking at every side of the subject. Hope this helps! :)
