So many people relied on the river back then, and still do to this day. The number one reason the river was needed was for crops. The sand and dirt away from the river was not fertile and dry, so crops weren't able to be grown. Now next to the river, the ground as fertile and wet. Farmers lived near and relied on the Nile a lot.
