History

Business leaders in the 1800s tried to eliminate competition by forming pools, trusts, monopolies, and through vertical and horizontal integration. Many companies organized pools to keep prices at a certain level, that is, they tried to keep prices from falling. Some companies formed trusts. A trust is a combination of firms or corporations formed by a legal agreement, especially to reduce competition. A monopoly is achieved when a company has total control of a type of industry. A company that is vertically integrated owns all parts of the industrial process. By doing so, these companies found it easier to control costs. Companies that are horizontally integrated have grown by buying its competitors. All of the aforementioned are ways companies or corporations have tried to control costs and eliminate competition.

How did labor and land ownership change after civil war
kvasek [131]
Following the U.S. Civil War, the Radical Republicans attempted to put a land reform through Congress, promising, 40 acres and a mule, to newly-freed blacks in the South, which was rejected by moderate elements as socialistic. This failure left blacks without an economic base, and was one of the key contributing factors to the development of sharecropping and segregation.

What are some pros and cons of being a merchant in the middle ages?
qaws [65]
The pros were that you were being protected by the guild in case of something bad happening you like getting hurt or similar. They would help you and your family for example. The cons were that you wouldn't be able to dictate the price of your wares which was done to prevent exploitation of consumers, so even if you were in a position to establish a personal monopoly, you couldn't and you couldn't become richer than what is the adequate wealth for a merchant.
