He said, “People, I have been chosen by you as your leader, though I am no better then you. If I do well, give me support. If I do wrong, set me right!” Then, Abu Bakr attempted to extend the Muslim’s influence even further, however Abu Bakr’s reign soon ended. He was at the age of 60 when became caliph, however he died two years later. During his time as a caliph, Abu Bakr extended Islam beyond the Arabian Peninsula. The armies of the caliphs pressed north all the way to the Caspian Sea. They rode east through pushing as far as the Indus River. They triumphed in Egypt and gazed in wonder at the mighty pyramids. They spread across North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. Islam started in the seventh century as a message proclaimed by one man, Muhammad. by the eighth century, a mere one hundred years after his death, it had become much more. Through conquest and trade, it had become a thriving religion and a mighty empire.
Muslim traders followed troops through Mediterranean lands. The Islamic Empire lay at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and Asia Muslim caliphs and merchants held a commanding position over traffic between East and West. Muslim traders carried their religion with them. They told people they met about Islam, urging the worshiping of Allah and adherence to decided to become Muslim, too.
