American Indians and the pilgrims started the Thanksgiving tradition. The pilgrims came to America from England in 1620. The American Indians showed the pilgrims how to grow different crops. In 1621, both the pilgrims and Indians gathered for a feast and they gave thanks for their survival. President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.
