Answer:

The three options are:

A. Orwell shows that, like the people of the Soviet Union, Clover experiences deep sadness about the violence.

B. Orwell shows that Clover had hopes similar to those of Soviet peasants—that life would eventually improve.

C. Orwell shows that Clover discovers she is mistaken in believing that the powerful would protect the weak.

Explanation:

"Animal Farm" by George Orwell is an allegorical novella written as a criticism of the Soviet regime in Russia, after the Russian Revolution. Orwell uses the animals as a representation of the Russian people. The animals fight for the ideal of equality, of the strong protecting the weak, by kicking out the human owner of the farm and taking over the land. They now work not for the profit of their owner, but for their own purposes of equality.

The excerpt shows how the animals, just like the Russian people, found out they were being misled. In the story, the pigs become a representation of Soviet leaders when they take control of the farm. They quickly realize how advantageous it is for them to have power, and they do everything to keep it - even killing their fellow animals -, getting more and more similar to humans in the process.

It is clear that Clover is deeply sad for the violent practices by their leader. She had hoped life would improve for all, and was mistaken when she believed that the powerful would protect the weak. Still, she does not wish to rebel for she deeply - and wrongly - believes that life was worse before the revolution.
