Images of Syrians fleeing their homes and taking treacherous journeys in search of safety in Europe have dominated the news as levels of global displacement have escalated. Figures released on Monday by the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, show that forced displacement affected more than 65 million people in 2015, the highest level ever recorded. Most of these people are in developing countries in their regions of origin.

This lesson mentioned that an effective introduction includes three main parts. One of them is called _______
Olenka [21]

Answer:

C). The reason the issue is important.

Explanation:

Introduction is one of the most significant elements of an essay or research paper as it functions to grab the audience's attention by introducing the key subject matter(topic) and its scope to them and outlining the key ideas that are going to be discussed.

It primarily consists of three elements: the opening statement(or the 'attention grabber') that reveals the topic in an appealing manner before the readers that captures their attention which is followed by supporting details(lead-in sentence) that justifies that why the topic(issue or concern that is being discussed) is significant and lastly, the thesis statement which declares the scope or purpose of the essay or work and key aspects that the author is going to focus upon.

As per the question, after grabbing the attention from the opening statement, the author needs to establish the credibility of his topic and build audience's trust. Therefore, he brings in 'the reason why the issue is significant' as it functions to support the author's decision to select that specific topic and aspect. Hence, option C is the correct answer.
