Amidst power struggle between two sons of Oedipus and their killing, Creon inherits a disastrous state and wants to restore peace and normalcy. In <em>Antigone</em>, he issues a decree against the proper burial of Polynices, the son of Oedipus which Antigone, the daughter opposes. Tiresias' prophecy, Antigone's dissent and Haemon's advice failed to move Creon to change his decision.
The play sends the message that if a king is so adamant in putting his rule into action above a moral standpoint and laws of the gods he is doomed to bring corruption and disaster.
