The painting was originally bought by the Duke of Urbino, and it is, therefore, called <em>Venus of Urbino</em>. However, it seems unlikely that the painting was commissioned by the Duke. It is unclear who the painting was commissioned by, or who it is meant to represent. The painting was created by Italian painter Titian in 1534, and sold to Urbino in 1538.
