Krakauer visits Franz, he discovers how Franz and McCandless meet. In addition to that Franz also shares, in
detail, the time he spent with McCandless and how we went about helping
McCandless by providing meals for him, listening to him (as friends do),
teaching him the trade of leatherworking, and driving him to San Diego so
McCandless could look for work. It is
from Franz that Krakauer learns of McCandless death, news of which Franz heard
from hitchhikers while Franz was living in a camper at McCandless’s old camp
