The answer would be:

"‘I'm not going to play anymore,' I said nonchalantly. ‘Why should I? I'm not a genius.'"

June, (Jing-Mei) uses a  specific mood when she says this phrase. Nonchalantly, which  means indifferent of unexcited.  She was not excited about her mom’s idea and insistence in her becoming a prodigy.  Her mom wanted to raise her in a way that she could blend and cope with what people call the American dream and be successful in life. She wanted to make her daughter a famous piano player.  Suyuan (June’s mom)  was born and raised in the Chinese culture where parents chose the destiny of their children, but then, June becomes just like other children in the United States, in the sense that not always children agree on parents’ decisions.

When parents have ideas and expectations of what their children should be ,it creates negative impact on their lives.  Parents would pressure on children wrongly thinking that what they say is what will assure them success in life, but contrary to this thought, most of the time, this makes children become rebellious and go against their parents will and do all they can to disappoint them.
