In writing the term <em>hook </em>refers to the first one or two sentences which serve as an introduction as well as to help the reader decide whether he or she wants to continue reading a given text or not. In other words, a hook helps to grab the reader’s attention. There are several ideas that can be used as hooks, for instance: literal Quotes, quotes from Famous People, Anecdotes, questions, statistics, and thesis, among many others.

For the particular case of Romeo and Juliet, the tragedy written by William Shakespeare, an example of hook could be as follow:

<em>"As its own author William Shakespeare claimed - 'For never was a story of more anguish than this of Juliet and her Romeo.'" </em>
