Write an expression for the area of the shaded region in its simplest form. Show all of your steps.
patriot [66]
The area of the shaded region will be the area of the rectangle minus the area of the white square inside of it:

((x+10)(2x+5)) - ((x+1)(x+1))

First, FOIL both of the areas separately:

(2x^2 + 5x + 20x + 50) - (x^2 + x + x + 1)

Simplify within the parentheses by adding like terms:

(2x^2 + 25x + 50) - (x^2 + 2x + 1)

Now, subtract one equation from the other:

2x^2 + 25x + 50
-x^2  -    2x  -   1
= x^2 + 23x + 49

This will be the equation for the area.

What is the length of the major axis of the ellipse (x-7)^2/4+(y+3)^2/16=1
yuradex [85]
\bf \begin{array}{llll}
\cfrac{(x-{{ h}})^2}{{{ a}}^2}+\cfrac{(y-{{ k}})^2}{{{ b}}^2}=1\\\\ \cfrac{(x-{{ h}})^2}{{{ b}}^2}+\cfrac{(y-{{ k}})^2}{{{ a}}^2}=1
\end{array}\quad
\begin{cases}
\textit{major axis}=a+a\\
a=\textit{the larger denominator}\\
b=\textit{smaller denominator}
\end{cases}\\\\
-----------------------------\\\\
\cfrac{(x-7)^2}{4}+\cfrac{(y+3)^2}{16}=1\implies \cfrac{(x-7)^2}{2^2}+\cfrac{(y+3)^2}{4^2}=1\quad
\begin{cases}
a=4\\
b=2

Solve the system of equations by elimination. <br><br> 2x + 2y = -2<br><br> 3x - 2y = 12
valkas [14]

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

2x + 2y = -2

3x - 2y = 12

5x = 10

x = 2

2(2) + 2y = -2

4 + 2y = -2

2y = -6

y = -3

(2, -3)
