The Declaration of Independence protects freedom of expression, freedom of religion, the right to keep and use weapons, freedom of assembly and freedom to petition. It also prohibits search and seizure for no reason, cruel and unusual punishment, and forced self-incrimination. Among the legal protections it provides, the Bill of Rights prohibits Congress from making any law relating to the establishment of religion and prohibits the federal government from depriving anyone of life, liberty or property without due process of law. In federal felony cases a formal indictment is required by a jury of instruction for any capital offense, or infamous crime, and the assurance of a speedy public trial with an impartial jury in the district where the crime occurred, and prohibits a double judgment.
