The Senators belong to the legislative branch of the government which is the branch that creates laws.  The senators also represent the people of their state.  The Senates write and vote of new laws, which are called bills. The senate can also approve of the actions made by the president, like appointing ambassadors. Even though Representatives can impeach a government official, the senate is the only one who can convict them.
