Read the excerpt from Thoughts and Sentiments. It is therefore manifest, that something else ought yet to be done; and what is r

equired, is evidently the incumbent duty of all men of enlightened understanding, and of every man that has any claim or affinity to the name of Christian, that the base treatment which the African Slaves undergo, ought to be abolished; and it is moreover evident, that the whole, or any part of that iniquitous traffic of slavery, can no where, or in any degree, be admitted, but among those who must eventually resign their own claim to any degree of sensibility and humanity, for that of barbarians. What text detail from this excerpt directly supports Cugoano’s belief that all good Christians have to participate in the abolishment of slavery? “is evidently the incumbent duty of all men of enlightened understanding” “and of every man that has any claim or affinity to the name of Christian” “iniquitous traffic of slavery, can no where, or in any degree, be admitted” “who must eventually resign their own claim to any degree of sensibility”

Every man who has any claim or affinity to the name of Christian

Further Explanation:

Cugoano appeals to the religious identity of informed citizens to be united in their attempts to abolish slavery and its evil effects from society and cleanse our society from this inhuman scourge. Thoughts and Sentiments is a clear reflection of former slave Cugoano’s harshest experiences while being a slave, and how being a slave breaks down every moral fiber within an individual’s body. His brutal treatment at the West Indies plantations has helped him to channelize his experiences into the revealing of the ugly consequences of slavery. In fact, he leads a direct attack into the supposedly established truths of slavery, such as the African community were suited to enslavement, and this was crucial for their survival, or that they were treated better than European serfs.

Cugoano appeals to the enlightened side of humanity in the light of a reformed society, to understand the problems faced by the slaves, and he believes that it is the moral obligation of the society to understand the humiliation faced by the slaves. Contrary to the popular myth, slaves do not get conditioned to labor and alienation, however, they come under a moral obligation to rebel against their constant degradation as humans. Thus, every man who is a responsible Christian and is a part of the enlightened English society, would cultivate empathy and work towards the abolishment of slavery, so that modern society does not bear its great scourge.

Read "Riches" by Sara Teasdale. Which two lines in the poem contain metaphors? I have no riches but my thoughts, Yet these are w
Citrus2011 [14]

The lines that contain metaphors are:

1)“My thoughts of you are golden coins”

2) “Stamped in the mint of memory”

A metaphor is a literary device that makes an implicit comparison between unrelated items or ideas. Despite of the fact that they seem to differ in many respects, there is a hidden connection between them. It differs from others figures of speech; namely Simile as it refers to an explicit comparison (use of “like” or “as”) that is established between to ideas or items.

In this particular poem, the author says that her thought is a very valuable treasure to her, especially because they are related to a special person to her. For this reason, the author makes a comparison between her thoughts and the treasured golden coins. Then, she continues adding another metaphor. She says that these precious memories will never disappear as they kept in her memory as golden coins are safe and properly stored in a mint.
