World War I is commonly referred to the "The war to end all wars." This war between a significant amount of countries was supposed to be one that would end warfare among competing nations. Americans hoped that this would be the case and preferred the US government to develop a policy of isolationism after the war. This is event from the US Congress's vote to not join the League of Nations after World War I.
