A narrative lead or "hook," is a way to grab a reader's interest or attention. It can be a sentence, a paragraph, or even a few pages long. In this instance, the lead is classified as narrative and not direct because the earthquake referenced took place so far in the past, therefore it can't be the main topic of the news story.
