A plateau is a high, level area. It can be formed through one tectonic plate sliding under another.

Answer: A plateau is generally an elevated highland area, which ranges upto thousands of kilometers. They have a relatively flat terrain and they appear like a table-shape, and is formed due to the erosion of the sides as well as on the surface. For example, the Deccan plateau and the Shillong plateau.

These plateaus are formed in various ways, such as-

  1. The magma when rises up near the surface, gets cooled and the due to the lower temperature, they gets crystallized and forms a plateau.
  2. They also form because of the tectonic upliftment, where the areas gets lifted up due to compressional forces.
