The factors that made the growth of these cities possible were: The export of agricultural products to Europe and the creation of means of transport such as the steam boat for transporting them, as well as the creation of the railroad made cities like New Orleans , Chattanooga, and Montgomery became large producers and exporters of cotton and wheat in the 1800s.

As can be seen, Agriculture was the central axis of the economy of the South, being the plantations of rice, tobacco, sugar cane and especially cotton the main agricultural products.

The unification of New Orleans was also one of the most important factors when noticing a considerable population growth that led many of its inhabitants to move from rural to urban areas.
