Recall that silent e is usually dropped before -able is added to an English word, except to indicate a soft c or g in the root (

Likeable is an exception to this rule.).

Answer: The correct form is "disposable".

Explanation: Although the word "dispose" ends in an "e", <u>the "e" is dropped </u>when the suffix "-able" is added to the root word <u>because the suffix starts with a vowel sound ("a"</u>). Moreover,<u> the "e" is dropped because there is no "c" or "g" in the root</u>. In that way, spelling the word formed with the root "dispose" plus the suffix "-able" as "disposeable" is incorrect: "disposable" is the correct form.

Read the passage from "The Goatherd and the Wild Goats."
Alinara [238K]

Good leaders treat everyone the same.

In the story the goatherd treats the wild goats better than his own goats in hopes of enticing them to stay with him and his flock. He gives them more food than his own goats. The Wild Goats see the difference and how he treats the goats that have been with him the longest and refuse to stay. They believe that the goatherd will treat them poorly when they are apart of his flock, so they don't want to stay with him. The goatherd learns that he should've treated everyone equally and then the Wild Goats would've seen the care with which he usually treats his flock and may have chosen differently.

Answer:

The option which the opening paragraph does the least to accomplish is:

B. immediately pull the reader into the action

Explanation:

Let's work this one out through elimination:

A. The opening paragraph DOES establish a relationship between the narrator and a character. We are immediately told they are uncle and nephew.

B. This seems to be the right choice for us. There is not a lot of action going on. We do not know what the uncle is listening for, what to expect, what is going on. This dragging creates some suspense as we wait for the action to start.

C. The opening paragraph DOES provide a sense of setting. As soon as we are told about the "cornfield" and the "breeze", we can imagine the characters are on a farm, out in the open.
