From the above sentence from Mark Twain's “The £1,000,000 Bank-Note," it can be implied that <u>poor people were expected to tolerate any ridicule made by the rich.</u>

Twain uses ordinary language spoken by the common people in his plays. He marks the strange behavior of humans. He mocks at the sophisticated nature of the aristocrats because of which they don't feel comfortable with other people. As a result, they stay at their home.
