Answer:

1. Symbols or Symbolism

2. Synodoche

3. Irony

4. Metonymy

Explanation:

1.

O, for a draught of vintage! that hath been

Cool'd a long age in the deep-delved earth,

Tasting of Flora and the country green,

Dance, and Provençal song, and sunburnt mirth!

This poem employs a heavy usage of the <u>literary device</u>, Symbols or Symbolism. Symbolism is a figure of speech in which a symbol is used to represent an idea or thought. This is evident in the lines of the poem <u>"tasting of Flora and the country green" and "Dance, and Provençal song, and sunburnt mirth!"</u>. The poet uses Flora to describe the taste of the vintage

2.

The western wave was all a-flame

The day was well nigh done!

Almost upon the western wave

Rested the broad bright Sun;

When that strange shape drove suddenly

Betwixt us and the Sun.

(from “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

This poem employs the usage of the <u>literary device</u>, Synecdoche. Synodoche is figure of speech in which a part of a thing is used to represent the whole. This is evident by the line <u>"The western wave was all a-flame"</u> - showing that the sun shone upon the sea; the western wave is used to represent the sea & a-flame used to describe the effect of the sun shining

3.

Thank Heaven! the crisis—

The danger is past,

And the lingering illness

Is over at last—

And the fever called "Living"

Is conquered at last.

(from “For Annie” by Edgar Allan Poe)

This poem employs the use of the <u>literary device</u>, Irony. Irony is a figure of speech in which the statement conveys meaning which is opposite or contradictory to the intended meaning. It is like sarcasm. This portion of the poem <u>"And the lingering illness Is over at last— And the fever called "Living""</u> brings this figure of speech to the forefront. The poet describes living as an 'illness', that's a classic irony

4.

Ah! sunflower, weary of time,

Who countest the steps of the sun,

Seeking after that sweet golden clime

Where the traveller’s journey is done;

This poem employs the <u>literary device</u>, Metonymy. Metonymy is a figure of speech in which one thing is substituted for another. This is made evident by the line <u>"Ah! Sunflower, weary of time"</u> - Sunflower (a flower) is actually used to substitute for a traveller (who is a human being)

how should a person study for each type of test (e.g., essay, short answer, oral, and multiple choice)
Triss [41]

Answer: To be efficient and effective with studying, you need to optimize the conditions under which you focus best; this can include both the time of day that you study, as well the environment in which you study. Pay attention when studying at different times and in different environments to figure out when and where you are the most productive, and study under the conditions that work best for you.

Many students claim to be most productive at night; however, most people are actually more focused and productive earlier in the day (i.e. morning, afternoon, and early evening). Tasks like reading a textbook or a journal article, writing a paper, or working on an assignment require a great deal of concentration, and the ability to do focused tasks tends to decline as the day goes on. Also, Be realistic when setting aside time to study (e.g., it is likely unrealistic to schedule study time after 5 hours of lectures or after an 8-hour shift at work).

Most students tend to find it easy to get distracted and to procrastinate when they study at home. Studying outside of home is often more effective.

Some students find they focus best with a bit of noise in the background, in which case a coffee shop or a group study area of the library (e.g., the 2nd floor of the Bennett library) may work best. Other students prefer total silence when studying, in which case a quiet or silent study area (e.g., the 6th floor of the Bennett Library) may be optimal.

When possible, eliminate distractions like a cell phone and/or laptop by not bringing them, turning them off, or, at least, putting them away during study time.

Avoid listening to music while you study (especially while doing readings), as it will take up some of your attention and thus make your studying less effective.

What is the theme of “A Complication or Two”? How does the narrator develop the theme? Use evidence from the text to support you
Anvisha [2.4K]

Answer :

The theme of "A Complication or Two" is that chance results in greater fortune than careful planning.

The narrator carefully constructs this theme throughout the story. The narrator had made a grand ten year plan for his future education, starting from an Ivy League School of choice to a Law School. However, fate had other plans for him and the role of fate started when he received his rejection letter from his preferred Ivy League School. He opted for some more volunteer service at Tri-Valley Hospital where he met his future university mate and wife, Alma . Coincidentally, he also landed a residency at Tri-Valley Hospital after clearing medical school. If he had received an acceptance letter from his parents' alma mater he would not have opted for more volunteering service and would not have met his wife of thirty years or landed the residency at Tri-Valley Hospital.

The following lines from "A Complication or Two" describe the role chance or fate plays in life :

"Looking back, I suppose my life started with that letter. I don’t think everything necessarily happens for a reason—there’s too much tragedy in the world for that. But there’s no doubt that some misfortunes turn into pivotal moments that can alter the course of a person’s life for the better. Alma and I have been together for 30 years now, and I still wonder what that other life—the one in which my letter said “congratulations”—might look like. I expect it would have been pretty grand, full of its own triumphs and pitfalls. "
