<span>This refers to the book "The Scarlet Letter." The scaffold is where Hester gets shamed for her adultery. I don't have the text with me to give details that support my contention; however, I would think that devoting a lot of time describing scaffold creates tension in that it makes scene more realistic and eerie.</span>

Here is a paragraph for "Two Kinds" which talks about the theme:

"Two Kinds" is actually known as a short story that was written by Amy Tan. The story has about two themes. One refers to the American Dream while the other theme has to do with tension that exists between a mother and her daughter. I think the story's theme tends to reflect more of what a daughter wants herself and what her mother wants for her. Her mother have great plan for her but she tends not to see it that way.
