Andrew Johnson was an exconfederate who was in favor of the south, but the congress wasnt fully in favor of the south, (moderate republicans were though)

Here are three different factors that influenced chattel slavery:

1) Need for cheap labor-
The need for cheap labor allowed for plantation owners to make a significant profit off their goods.

2) Desire for cotton- During the early to mid 19th century, the US and Europe were constantly in need of cotton due to the high amount of uses it has. This supported slavery, as plantation owners needed to continue to make a large amount of cotton to be sold.

3) Racism- The systematic belief that whites were superior to blacks helped in justifying slavery in the US for over a century.
