They found it hard until they managed to sort and properly establish their own city-state but once they did there was no stopping in its progress.
The Aztec gods were a bloodthirsty warlike ones and they were telling the Aztecs to go on and destroy the people that were treating them terribly before and that resulted in wars. The wars were won by the Aztecs and they started to expand. The gods were not satisfied with this though and they wanted them to continue with the brutal military conquests and so the Aztecs did, attacking, massacring, and brutally ruling over other people.
