He was the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces of the US forces during world war one.

He was the only American in his lifetime to reach the rank of the General of the Armies which is the highest possible rank in the Army of United States.

He also served in several Indian campaigns in New Mexico and he was also known to be Black Jack because he also served the 10th cavalry regiment which is a segregated African American unit in the army.
