The United States began more of a <em>1. market economy but grew more mixed as government added laws and regulations</em>. In a market economy, a free market of voluntary trade is the first way men exchanged goods and protected their private property. In a mixed economy private property is protected, but ot also allows governments to intervene in economic activities for the public good.
