The 8-track cartridge was very popular in the USA in the 60s and 70s. This media was the pioneer in recording sound content on magnetic tapes - a technique that later originated other mechanisms that serve for data storage, such as hard drives.
The first 8-track cartridge developed for commercial use was launched in 1958 and this medium was the precursor to the development of portable sound equipment - although the device that touched it was not as easy to transport as the devices we have today.
