Please help!! The fall of the House of Usher
zloy xaker [14]

6. Roderick Usher has become extremely sensitive to all that which affect the senses: to light, sound, smells, flavors, textures.

7. Usher believes that a family nervous condition will be the cause of his death, that he will die of madness.

8. Madeline is Roderick Usher's sistr. If she dies, Roderick will be the only member left of the Usher family.

9. Madeline is becoming increasingly weak; she suffers from a disease that makes her appear as if she were dead even though she is alive; when the narrator reaches the house of Usher, Madeline has been so decimated by her illness that she must now lie in bed and will probably die soon.

10. The narrator realizes that Roderick Usher has been overtaken by gloom and that he has lost his mind.

11. Roderick Usher can only hear music that is played on string instruments, particularly the guitar, which allows him to accompany the songs of his own mad creation. All other sounds are unbearable to his ears.

12. In the poem "The Haunted Palace", a parallelism is established between the palace, as the actual building described in the poem, and Roderick's head. The two windows through which first angels are seen dancing in harmony and then demons are seen are Roderick's eyes; the door is his mouth, from which wise words used to flow, but now only a madman's laugher emerges. The downfall of Roderick's mind, and of Roderick's family, brings the downfall of the actual house where he and his sister dwell.

After reading the poem "The Village Blacksmith," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, we can say the word choice affects it in the following manner:

C. It compares the sound of the blacksmith working to the sound of music playing.

<h3>What is word choice?</h3>
  • Word choice refers to the use authors make of words in order to convey their message in an effective, precise, and impactful way. The words an author chooses will help readers visualize what the author is describing.

<h3>What does the word choice convey in the poem?</h3>
  • In "The Village Blacksmith," the use of words such as "<u>hear</u>", "<u>blow</u>", "<u>measured</u>", "<u>beat</u>", and "<u>slow</u>" conveys a musical quality to the description.
  • In other words, the speaker is using words that help compare the movements and sounds produced by the blacksmith to music. We can hear the rhythmic sounds of his hammer ringing like a bell.

With the information above in mind, we can choose letter C as the best option.

What role do symbols play in supporting a story's theme? Use an example from "The Necklace
Nina [5.8K]

Answer:

Explanation:

There are thee chores to be done here.

  1. find the symbols in the necklace
  2. State the theme of the story
  3. Connect the symbols to the them

<u>Symbols</u><em>: The Necklace</em> has 2 main symbols -- the necklace itself and a mirror.

<u>Theme</u>: The theme of the story is greed. <em>Greed</em> can be and usually <em>is quite destructive.</em>

<u>Connection</u>  The necklace in this story depends largely on what it is made of. To use a modern day example, it can be made of clear plastic or diamonds. An untrained eye will not know the difference. The main character (: Mathilde Loisel) has anything but a trained eye. She goes to a party where only special people are invited. She is not impressed by the generosity of her husband who gives her enough money to buy a dress -- a good looking one at that. Along the way she meets a friend who is wealthy who agrees to loan her a necklace. She is a hit at the party and when she leaves, she discovers that the necklace is lost. She does not report its loss: instead she and her husband take out a loan to buy another one. It takes them ten years to pay the loan back. It turns out the necklace she borrowed was not nearly as expensive as the one she replaced it with. Greed ruins she and her husband.

The mirror is another symbol. It is not a very complimentary one. It shows how vain and rather dense Mathilde is. She is not content with her natural beauty. She is not content with her charm. She looks in the mirror to confirm her lack of good looks and decides she needs something to enhance her appearance. The mirror provides what she sees.
